Understanding Money Personality Types: The Spenders [2 of 4]
There are four Money Archetypes that shape what we believe about money and how it impacts what we do-or don’t do-with our money. The second money personality type is the Free Spirit. Known for their radical optimism and general "why not?!" attitude toward life, they tend to be excited to spend. The shadow side of their excitement is they sometimes spend and focus on outward appearances as a reflection of their self-worth. Think your spending makes you a Free Spirit? Watch to find out!

    During my studies its very interesting to learn how Financial Therapist without a license, nor having any type of degree requirement if they are able to show therapy "experience" have the ability to become certified and practice in any state as laws do not apply to them. They are claiming and teaching they provide therapy and treat financial "debilitating anxiety & depression" I wish there were more laws and regulation to prevent this type of public deception which puts the public's safety at risk. t would be great if there was a published side-by-side chart to clearly identify and list out the differences between a licensed therapist with financial training & a Finacial Planner with therapy training. Thank you for providing this education so the public is aware and understand the right question to ask before talking to any financial therapist.

      There's a difference between a "reason" and an "excuse." Helping people understand the various factors that might be contributing to overspending is validating and supportive and can help them make meaning of their behaviors. I know youre not able to sell financial products, but are you able to sell courses/guides, etc. or other products on what you do as a financial therapist or other products in general ?

    • @MindMoneyBalance
      @MindMoneyBalance 14 днів тому

      In general YES! A person's "home discipline" has the ethical rules and guidelines they must adhere to, so rules may vary between a psychotherapist (such as a LMFT, LMSW, or MFT) and a financial professional (such as a CFP or CPA) on what they sell and how they sell it.

      Great idea! Here they are, and I've popped them in the description, too. Are there certain times where you're more likely to spend money? Are there certain situations where you're more likely to save money? How does it feel? What are the emotional responses that you get when you swipe your card, when you add to your cart, or when you spend money? Do you feel different when you're earning money, spending money, saving money, or giving money? How do you feel about each of those four everyday interactions with money? Which ones are more likely to be stressful? And which ones are more likely to feel supportive?

    Hi Lindsay, this is a fantastic video! Thanks for giving all these clear suggestions about how to manage your money in practical terms, beyond the basic tip of having a budget which doesn't get you very far when you actually need to build a game plan for managing your finances. I would add that depending on where you live, it's also worth checking annually if you're eligible for any financial aid (eg for child care, housing) and if you're employed, finding out if your employer offers any advantages like support for transport (car sharing, taking public transport or cycling to work) or investing. My husband and I come from very different backgrounds and it took us several years to get on the same page financially. I insisted we take note of our incomes and expenses for about two years to have a clear picture of how our money was flowing, we did that in an excel spreadsheet. That really helped us understand where we were and honestly makes the annual/quarterly updates SO much easier now. We live in France and also got some help from an accredited financial advisor who of course earned a commission for the products we subscribed through him, but we consider it was worth it because he recommended appropriate investment options for us that have been giving good results, whereas we would have probably been too scared of placing larger sums on actions or bonds by ourself. So as you said, it's worth educating yourself and considering getting professional advice to take action. We have a toddler and it's hard to find a quiet time to sit down and do our financial planning now, but your video has reminded me how important we check in regularly how we're doing, so thank you! ;)

    I have dyscalculia/adhd. One of the big signs of dyscalculia is getting lost or having no sense of direction. I woukd joke about getting lost going around the block. It ialso translates into getting lost in life directions. Not having a spending plan blue print map, not knowing what account balances are, or a lack of clarity on incoming/out going. I am lost that way and just cant find rhe map or direction out of the mess.

      Same! Understanding the consequences of having both, that I am a compulsive spender and the WHY I spend, finally put me on a better path. I buy things to soothe, cajole and reward myself. I now that that with things that are free and not materialstic, plus I deal with the emotion, talk to my best friend, journal. I only have a prepay credit card and have savings accounts that make it very hard and expensive to withdraw money. I never go to the city to stroll, unless it's a vacation (and I have a set amout of money to spend), once a year (with like 300$ to spend on a pair of shoes and second hand clothing. It's an annual ritual with a bonus. paid for by admin money from work (which is not budgeted into my monthly budget). I save the money or spend it on nice groceries or social time with friends. I also like using a budget app and my city has a free budget advice office, run by a foundation. I stay off websites and apps that make me want to spend. If I want the dopamine hit of a pretty thing to buy, I look at Pinterest (but they have Ads now, which sucks!!!).

    Interesting thing that happened to me. I had a problem with impulsive buying, and for years I had been taking Adderall. After some research, I kept hearing about the link between Adderall and impulse buying/behavior. My Dr. switched me to Atomoxetine, and I seem to have more control now and stop and think "do I really need that" Not saying this will work for everyone, just worked for me.

    Great video and analysis, thanks! Curious where one can get 6.25% on a 30 year mortgage now? I've been hearing the avg is around 7% even with excellent credit. Maybe 6.25% is for a 15 year loan?

    • @MindMoneyBalance
      @MindMoneyBalance 2 місяці тому

      Great question, and (drumroll) it depends! Shopping around for loan rates is a good idea-rates bounce around, and you're right: The interest rate ranges up to 7-7.5% (I filmed this about a month before I posted it, hence the differentiation in interest rates). Sometimes, a local credit union will have a better rate than a national bank, and sometimes, the opposite is true.

People do not understand that for some people, it is easier to navigate our world, and for others, it is not. That statement goes across the board mental health, health, work. You’re the first financial therapist that I had seen. I had seen some programs in the past. To me, there’s a huge gap between the industry of financial counseling/ financial planning and therapeutic services. I was a life coach first, and then began working for an employee assistance program as a money coach. That organization could only scratch the surface of what you’re talking about. Early on, I became disenchanted about their commitment to bridging that gap. I believe there needs to be more of what you’re doing in the world.

    I happy to see that you’re covering this topic. I would like to see more about this. I think you can narrow the focus and make create more clarity about how to use for oneself and with our loved ones the questions to encourage awareness and the clarity our motivations. To me, the magic of this model is that it does not rely on external energy of ‘Drill Sargent,’ ‘Cheerleader’ or even the hand holding energies of a therapist. Instead, it helps the client to see, hear and feel their own internal energies and motivations. Please make more content like this.

    Hi Lindsay! We used to be IG friends, I was formerly (creative practice building) on IG and I am so glad to see you on YT, I agree with you, the shelf life for IG and Tik Tok is so, so low....I love being on TY, it has a much better shelf life and to be is just more meaningful and less of a time suck. I hope you are well :)

    I loved this video. It has been so fun to watch your evolution! And as a member of Inside Out Cohort #7, I'm so glad I had that opportunity and appreciated your integrity and transparency as you pivoted! Was such a gift. Cheering you on!

    I relate so much to the story of your money background Lindsay! I don't want to downplay anyone's hard work but I feel like most of what I see on the UA-cam/Instagram space is the "rags to riches" story because that seems more relatable or legitimizes someone's financial journey rather than someone who may have lived a more middle of the road life. While my financial journey hasn't been without a lot of struggle, I definitely grew up with a lot of privilege financially as I never had to worry about food or clothing, and that contributed to a large source of my money shame. Thanks again for sharing!

      Of COURSE!! There's a *_very_* narrow story of being financially well that we're supposed to fit into: grow up struggling, work hard, earn and make a lot and be rewarded. But for anyone who falls outside of that (ahem, it's most of us) we aren't given the space to explore our relationship with money.

    Has that way of approaching the subject helped the clients?

    Must be nice to be that rich that you can afford to stay at a Holiday Inn, get a blowout a few times a year, and have a car in working condition while you're "not making a lot."

    Are you gonna continue to be a victim or be the victor. Taking accountability is not victim blaming
